Vice President and General Counsel of The General Motor Corporation

Honorary Doctor of Laws

1980

Citation:

Your special skills as an attorney and your unique attributes as a man have enabled you to contribute in diverse and significant ways to society. In your present position as Vice President and General Counsel of the General Motors Corporation, your presence in Detroit has been keenly felt and appreciated in recent years. Prior to this, however, your long and distinguished career in Michigan state government and private law practice contributed immeasurably to our lives. As Chairman of the Michigan Public Service Commission, Auditor General of the State of Michigan and justice of the Supreme Court of the State of Michigan, you have consistently shown yourself to be a responsible and intelligent guardian of judicial care. Your many leadership contributions to civic, community and professional organizations have reflected your concern for important social issues and your personal commitment to them. You have provided guidance to several universities, the National urban League, the United Foundation the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit, the Detroit Institute of Arts and the American Arbitration Association, to name but a few. It is a privilege to confer upon you the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws. Commencement, University of Detroit, School of Law, May 17, 1980.
