Citation:

As a 1968 alumnus of the University of Detroit School of Dentistry, you have demonstrated your dedication to the profession of dentistry and to the advancement of higher education. In your current position as President of the University of Maryland at Baltimore, you have been instrumental in guiding the University toward attaining a national reputation in the health sciences and human services. Your progressive leadership was also apparent when, as Dean of the University of Maryland Dental School, you initiated a new approach for dental education that emphasized critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Your contributions to the dental profession include the development of a national program to publicize dentistry as a career and to attract qualified applicants to dental schoolsa program that is still in use today by the American Association of Dental Schools. You have held the highest offices in numerous professional academic organizations and currently serve as President of the American Academy of the History of Dentistry. Through your published works and your activities as a national consultant, you have generously shared your skills and expertise. As a result of your contributions, you have received the Martin Luther King Humanitarian Award and many honors from associations of dentistry. Your professional and community accomplishments serve as an inspiration to all dental students and colleagues. In recognition of your significant contributions to the profession of dentistry and to your innovative leadership in higher education, the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry is proud to confer upon you an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Degree.
