Domestic Prelate of the Holy Father

Honorary Doctor of Laws

1932

Citation:

Upon Reverend Hugh D. McCarthy, scholastic son of Assumption College and St. Mary's Seminary, priest of the diocese of Detroit, and Domestic Prelate of the Holy Father, who by his energy, zeal and initiative in the humbler position of his first pastoral charge [St. Leo's Parish] marked himself out as a leader among his fellow-priests in the diocese, who more recently as the director and administrator of a great city parish, and of a Catholic parochial and a Catholic high school that have won distinction for their excellence, has maintained and enhanced the reputation acquired by those earlier efforts; kind and considerate in the care of souls, as generous in service to the forgotten criminal as to the elite of human society; liberal support of Catholic charities; tireless promoter of Catholic education; fearless champion of Catholic truth; the University of Detroit confers, for the sake of honor, the degree of Doctor of Laws, and gladly enrolls him on the list of her distinguished sons. Rev. McCarthy's honorary degree was conferred on October 25, 1932.
