Background information is taken from a one-page biography located in University Archives. The biography is printed on non-letterhead paper and includes Mr. Macdonald's photograph. Ray W. Macdonald was elected Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Burroughs Corporation in November 1973. He previously served as President and CEO, President and Chief Operations Officer, and Executive Vice President. Mr. Macdonald joined Burroughs as a salesman in the Company's Chicago office shortly after his graduation from the University of Chicago's School of Business Administration and later transferred to the sales division in the Company's home office in Detroit. Mr. Macdonald joined the Export Department of Burroughs in 1943, became the Assistant Manager and five years later became the Export Manager. In 1953, he was appointed General Manager of Burroughs International Operations, and the following year was elected Vice President in charge of the Corporation's sales and service operations outside the United States and Canada, including 18 subsidiary companies and a worldwide dealer organization. Mr. Macdonald shared his talent and knowledge by serving as a member of the Boards of Directors of the Chrysler Corporation and Michigan Bell Telephone Company. He served as a Trustee of the Manpower Institute, a member of the British North American Committee, the Foreign Policy Committee, the U.S. Council of International Chamber of Commerce, and the Harvard Business School Visiting Committee. Mr. Macdonald served as the Chairman of the Board of the Economic Club of Detroit, and on the Boards of Directors of the United Foundation, Detroit Renaissance, and New Detroit Incorporated.
