Attorney; Counsel to Dykema, Gossett, Spencer, Goodnow & Trigg

Honorary Doctor of Laws

1980

Citation:

One of America's most prominent and respected attorneys, you provide the graduating students of the university of Detroit School of Law with a fine example of what they themselves should aspire to become: attorneys of exceptional conscience, capability and dedication. As president and director of the American Bar Association, the American Bar Foundation, and numerous other important legal organizations, you have promoted high standards of professional conduct and responsibility as well as equality in our system of justice. The innumerable contributions you have made extend beyond the legal profession to the society it serves. As Chairman of the National Board of the United Negro College Fund, a member of the Board of Trustees of several colleges and advisor and counselor to many other organizations, you have demanded and given much of yourself. In doing so, you have taught others of the great need to give of themselves. It is a privilege to confer upon you the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws. Commencement, University of Detroit, School of Law, May 17, 1980.
