Background information was located on World Wide Web sites and correspondence in University archive files. Nathan Goodnow was a prominent lawyer in Detroit and Michigan. He was born on Sept. 20, 1906 and died June, 1985. He served as president of the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association (1955-56) and president of the Michigan State Bar in 1965. Goodnow was a member of the Dykema law firm in Detroit, Michigan. The President's Award given by the Detroit Bar Association was named after Goodnow because his name epitomized the purpose of the award, that is, an award given "in recognition of a career that exemplifies the highest standard of the legal profession and significantly impacted the law and life of the community." In addition to the honorary degree, Goodnow received the Michigan State Bar Foundation Founders Award. Goodnow is an alumnus of the University of Detroit School of Law. Mr. Goodnow was presented with the Honorary Doctor of Laws degree during Commencement, University of Detroit, School of Law, May 23, 1976.
