The writer gives a brief overview of the events celebrating the Fourth of July in that city. He notes the assemblies of marching societies that honored African American marchers. He also points out that the Italian fishermen were the exception to this and refused to march next to African Americans.

The writer tells her readers that while Canada has equal rights for all, Canadians of African descent are not welcoming of fugitive slaves who enter the country. Instead of uniting as a race with newly arrived fugitive slaves, black Canadians will often side with white Canadians against them in courts of law, take advantage of them through "begging" schemes, or attempt to deny them the same societal benefits they enjoy as Canadians.

As the Young Men's Christian Association establishes itself in Canada, the writer wonders aloud how this organization with its emphasis on brotherhood will receive those of African descent. The writer then focuses on the influence of Christianity and the Church on racial prejudice that is increasing in Canada.
