Confidentiality of library records

The University Libraries adhere to the stipulations of The Library Privacy Act (Act 455 of 1982) of the State of Michigan which "provides for the confidentiality of certain library records" and protects its patrons from unlawful access to these records. Therefore,

All check out records, fine records, and materials requests of the University of Detroit Mercy Libraries users will be treated as confidential information. This confidentiality covers the following:

  • Records of the check out of any library resources (books, periodicals, media)
  • Fines incurred and/or paid
  • Databases searched, including those on the Internet
  • Interlibrary loans requested
  • INFOPASS requests
  • Use of the library facilities

Online searches, including search requests and results, occurring through the University and Libraries/IDS authenticated wireless or wired access points are treated as confidential; that is, there are no record retained by the university of which sites were accessed.

Transactions that extend beyond the University's network are subject to the privacy policies of those individual sites. For example, it is likely that sites like Google,Yahoo, Facebook, etc. track access.
