Book of the week

book cover

This book offers curated, practice-based critical perspectives on purpose-built and refurbished buildings designed to support older people ageing in place within high- and medium-rise integrated communities. The book examines design innovations aligned with policy developments across public and private sectors to enhance wellbeing, quality of life, and social citizenship, while fostering intergenerational exchange. Drawing on case studies from Portugal, Singapore, India, New Zealand, the UK, Sweden, Belgium, and the United States, chapters are grounded in evidence-based research, including primary data and post-occupancy evaluations of architecture’s social performance. The projects demonstrate high- and medium-rise housing as an emerging and effective typology for meeting residential and care needs in later life. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, the book serves as a valuable resource for architects, designers, urban planners, and professionals and students in health, social care, gerontology, and medical sociology.
