Mercy Medallion

Stanley and Margaret (Peggy) Winkelman have been married for over forty years and for the most of those years have been involved in the business, civic, and cultural development of the Detroit community. Long-time Detroiters, Mr. and Mrs. Winkelman both attended the University of Michigan. Mr. Winkelman worked for a brief period as a research chemist at California Institute of Technology before entering the U.S Navy where he served as a lieutenant. Directly thereafter he began his career with Winkelman Stores, Inc from which he recently retired after 38 years of service and leadership to the company.
 
Mr. Winkelman has been a significant leader in the business and economic development of the Detroit community through his involvement with Detroit Renaissance Inc., Metropolitan Affairs Corporation, Economic Alliance from Michigan, Detroit Executives Service Corporation, National Municipal League Council, Detroit Economic Growth Corporation, Economic Club of Detroit and the Greater Detroit Chamber of Commerce.
 
He has volunteered his services to numerous civic and charitable organizations which include United Foundation, Orchestra Hall, Community Foundation of Southeastern Michigan, Jewish Home for the Aged and Michigan Commission on Art in Public Places.
 
Aside from attending the University of Michigan, Peggy Winkelman also attended University of California at Berkeley and studied dance with a number of notable professionals. Her interest in the arts manifested itself in her many years of dedicated service to the cultural development of Detroit. She has served in several capacities with the Detroit Institute of Arts including her current role as trustee, chairman of the Museum Shop Advisory Committee, and member of the Joint Museum Collections Committee, the Executive Committee and the Staff-Trustee Personnel Committee.
 
Her volunteer involvements include the New Detroit Arts Committee, Alliance Francaise de Detroit, Friends of Orchestra Hall, Michigan Artrain, the Michigan Council of Concerned Citizens for Arts and Wayne State University Hilberry Theater. She has also served on the Mayor’s Committee to select the most Outstanding Citizen of Detroit, as a board member for Planned Parenthood League and B’nai B’rith Foundation and on committees for the National Council in Jewish Women and for the a Temple Beth El.
 
Together, Mr. and Mrs. Winkelman have given their time and expertise to a number of educational institutions and interests including Wayne State University, University of Detroit, Wayne Country Community College and University of Michigan. Mr. Winkelman has been active on the Detroit Citizens Education Task Force, Detroit Board of Education Monitoring Commission, Detroit High School Study Commission, and the Governor’s Commission on Higher Education.
 
The Winkelman have received numerous awards and honors including the Tree of Life Award from the Jewish National Fund in 1983 and they have both been honored by receiving the P.I.M.E. Missionaries Knights of Charity Award. Mrs. Winkelman has been given the Distinguished Service Award from the Wayne State University Board of Governors and Mr. Winkelman has received the Booker T. Washing Award, Fred M. Butzel Memorial Award, National Retail Merchants Association Silver Plaque Award and the Wayne State University Builders of Detroit Award.
