President's Cabinet Award

1985

Citation:

You have acted in plays by Shakespeare and Synge; you have played saints and sinners; your credits range from London to New York. In the early Plays Sundown and The Young and Fair, you let it be known: Broadway had a new promising star. Over the years you have kept that promise by dazzling audiences and critics with such colorful roles as Sally Bowles in I Am A Camera and Ophelia in Hamlet. Your most recent honor for portrayal of Emily Dickinson in The Belle of Amherst brought you an unprecedented total of five Tony Awards. In your dramatic roles you have mirrored the loneliness of adolescence and the steadfastness of maturity. Your dramatic creativity and insight have been inspirational to aspiring performers and to the general public.

Award was presented at the President’s Cabinet Eighteenth Annual Awards Dinner, May 18, 1985.
