From your earliest years, you demonstrated exceptional promise - promise which has been fulfilled in your professional and private life. In a distinguished career of service to the citizens of this state, this nation, and the world, you have dedicated yourself to the highest standards of personal courage and integrity in upholding the public trust. As a naval officer, writer, Assistant Secretary of State, to your years as Ambassador, Governor and Chief Justice of Michigan, you have earned respect at home and abroad. Eight foreign countries have publicly honored your work. Civic, ethnic, religious and labor organizations in Michigan and across the nation have recognized your achievements. Your work in the area of civil rights increased the opportunities for Black people throughout the United States. Now in your retirement years, you have chosen to share the wealth of your experience with students enrolled in the School of Law at the University of Detroit. For your vast contributions, we salute you with this Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree. Commencement, University of Detroit, May 16, 1987.
