Judge, United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth District

Honorary Doctor of Laws

1987

Citation:

Forty years ago you entered the profession of law, determined to forge a pathway for women to follow. Your dedication to the principle of equal opportunity and your belief in the American system of justice has formed the foundation for your professional life. It has also increased the opportunities for all women interested in pursuing a career in law. Your achievements have brought you personal honor, but they have also inspired others. You were the first woman from Michigan appointed to serve as a federal judge - both at the district and circuit level. You were the first woman ever elected to the National Conference of Federal Trial Judges. You were also the first woman elected Director of the Detroit Bar Association. It is in a spirit of admiration that we confer upon you this Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree. Commencement, University of Detroit, School of Law, May 17, 1987.
