Bio:

Dr. Carla Groh joined the College of Health Professions and McAuley School of Nursing of the University of Detroit Mercy in 1996.  During her distinguished career, she has demonstrated significant achievement in teaching, service and scholarship.  Her expertise in mental health nursing, research and administration have made her a valuable asset to nursing, physician assistant, health services administration and nurse anesthesia students.  She mentors students in research, often working with them on research and quality initiatives at the McAuley Health Center.

As a testament to her outstanding teaching ability and contribution to nursing, Dr. Groh received a Fulbright Lecture Award in winter 2004, teaching psychiatric nursing in Iceland.  In March 2011, she was awarded the distinguished honor of Visiting Professor at the Irish Institute in Dublin and Belfast.  As a certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, Dr. Groh has been integral to the development of the McAuley Health Center, a nurse-managed center.  In 2011, she received a three-year $750,000 federally-funded grant to support the nurse-managed center and serves as project director.

Dr. Groh has a well-developed program of research distinguished by numerous scholarly achievements.  Her research interests are varied revolving around the issues of women and mental health with a record of funding to support those efforts.  She has over 17 publications and is the co-author of a Women’s Mental Health: A Clinical Guide for Primary Care Practitioners, a mental health textbook which was recently awarded the 2012 Alpha Sigma Nu Award.

In addition to these accomplishments, Dr. Groh continues to provide service to the University community.  She served as chair of the Promotion and Tenure Committee, as co-director of the Women’s Studies Program and recently served on the search committee for a University president.

Dr. Groh’s achievements have had a significant impact on the nursing community.  Her work will continue to bring great distinction to the McAuley School of Nursing and University.  She is an exemplar of excellence and a role model for faculty and students.

Dr. Groh was presented by Christine Pacini, Dean, McAuley School of Nursing and College of Health Professions and the Distinguished Faculty Award was presented by Antoine M. Garibaldi, President of University of Detroit Mercy on November 30, 2012.
