Professor, College of Business Administration

Professor Emerita

2014

Bio:

Professor Mary Ann Hazen joined the faculty of the College of Business and Finance (now named the College of Business Administration) in 1989 as an Assistant Professor.  She was promoted to Associate Professor of Management in 1995 and earned full Professorship in 2006.  Prior to her career at University of Detroit Mercy she held the position as Assistant Professor, Business Administration, University of Wisconsin/Green Bay, Adjunct Lecturer, Organizational Behavior, Cleveland State University, and Instructor/Teaching Assistant, Case Western Reserve University.

As noted by Dean Eisenhauer of the College of Business Administration, “As an educator, Professor Hazen exhibits a passion for teaching that ignites interest in the subject matter among her students at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.  The student evaluations of her teaching have consistently been strong, and students especially appreciate her enthusiasm and concern for their success.”

One student in contributing to her teaching evaluations noted “Dr. Hazen was very open to new ideas and kept a solid format of the class throughout the semester.  Showed she actually cared about the students’ success.”  Another student wrote “This is a great instructor; she uses her previous knowledge of the business environment and brought it to the classroom by teaching in ways that were interesting and helpful.  She used a variety of teaching methods which helped me better understand the topics and subject matter.  Her instruction is extremely beneficial as we move forward and will carry through into real life.”  Yet another student commented “Dr. Hazen is an excellent professor with lots of real world experience.  She is very knowledgeable about the subject matter and always conducts herself in a professional/ethical manner.  Dr. Hazen cares greatly for her students (not only for their grades, but for their futures as well, treats them great, and is also very understanding…She made each and every class very enjoyable.”

In Dean Eisenhauer’s support letter he wrote that “In addition to being an outstanding teacher, Dr. Hazen has been a productive scholar, exceeding the rigorous standards for ‘Academically Qualified’ faculty that are required for the College’s external accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.  She has published dozens of research papers as articles in high-quality peer-reviewed journals and chapters in scholarly books, and her conference presentations have been equally extensive.  Her work has also influenced other scholars around the world; her publications have been cited more than 350 times, and her study of polyphonic organizations is considered foundational.

The mission of the College of Business Administration is to “prepare diverse students to serve business organizations and society with competence, compassion, and conscience.  Rooted in the Jesuit and Mercy traditions, the College champions academic excellence and good character by encouraging intellectual, spiritual, ethical, and social growth.”  “Dr. Hazen has not only supported this mission professionally, she has lived it on a deep and personal level, so that her career is emblematic of our institutional identity, especially our Mercy charism.”

Dean Eisenhauer commented that “Dr. Hazen has always found good pedagogy, research, and community service to be mutually reinforcing, and her values are evident in each of these activities.  Illustrative of the value she places on diversity, she co-created a graduate course on Diversity in Management and Marketing, and shared the experience with other educators in her article, ‘Teaching an Issues-Based Interdisciplinary Course: Diversity in Management and Marketing.’  Similarly, illustrative of the value she places on ethical development, teamwork, and service to the community, she co-created a core MBA course that requires service-learning – Personal Development, Ethics, and Social Responsibility in Organizations….She has utilized service-learning at the undergraduate level as well, and even serves on the Steering Committee of the Institute for Leadership and Service.  A strong believer in the value of teamwork, she routinely organizes classes so that students learn to work together, and has also written about it in ‘Service Learning in Diverse Teams.’”

Dr. Hazen served both the college and the university admirably.  She served the College of Business Administration as Management Discipline Coordinator, and a member of the Strategic Planning and Assurance of Learning Committee, was Library Faculty Liaison/Management, and chaired search committees, an AACSB Reaccreditation Committee, and the Graduate Standards and Curriculum Committee.  Her contributions to university shared governance include the McNichols Faculty Assembly, the Undergraduate Retention Committee, Graduate Program Review Committee, Entrepreneurial Team, and Faculty Development Team.  She was an active participant on the university Women and Gender Studies Steering Committee, Task Force on Service Learning, Interdisciplinary Task Force for Leadership Minor, and Committee on the Academic Status of Women.

Dr. Hazen has been the recipient of a number of awards including Beta Gamma Sigma which recognizes business excellence, UDM’s President’s Award for Faculty Excellence (1996/97), Award for Excellence, Best Paper Award, Journal of Organizational Change Management (1993), and Outstanding Faculty Member Award for Excellence in Communication, University of Wisconsin/Green Bay Communications Research Center (1988/89).

Professor Hazen holds a A.B. in sociology from Ursuline College, a Master’s in Social Work from the University of Michigan, and a Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior from Case Western Reserve University.  She also participated in the Post Graduate Training Program, Gestalt Institute of Cleveland.

Professor Hazen’s nomination for Professor Emerita was approved and conferred by Dr. Antoine M. Garibaldi, President of University of Detroit Mercy on August 18, 2014.  Dr. Hazen entered eternal life on January 6, 2018.
