GIFTS

IN MANITOBA SCHOOL CHILDREN WERE GIVEN SACK DRESSES,
PENCILS, NOTEBOOKS, AND SHIRTS BY THE TEACHER AT CHRISTMAS TIME.
USUALLY THE TEACHER SUPPLIED THE GIFTS FROM HER OWN RESOURCES AND
FUNDS BUT SHE WAS OCCASIONALLY AIDED BY A WEALTHY PARENT WHO WOULD
SUPPLY MONEY FOR GIFTS FOR ALL THE KIDS. INDIVIDUAL POOR PARENTS
HARDLY PARTICIPATED IN THE GIFT GIVING.
