THE HOUSE ON ANTIETAM

MY MOTHER HAD A CHAIR AND SHE KEPT HER ALARM CLOCK AND HAIRPINS
ON IT. IT WAS NEXT TO THE BED. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS IT VIBRATED
SO THAT THE HAIRPINS AND CLOCK WOULD BE THROWN INTO THE AIR.
NOTHING ELSE BUT THE CHAIR WOULD VIBRATE.
ONE DAY THE WOMAN DOWNSTAIRS CAME UP AND SAID THAT IF WE DIDN'T
STOP POUNDING ON THE FOOT OF THE BED AT NIGHT SHE WOULD MOVE.
MY MOTHER AND FATHER HEARD THE NOISE TOO AND COULDN'T FIGURE IT OUT.
ONE DAY WE ALL HEARD A BIG COMMOTION IN THE PANTRY AND A LOAF OF
BREAD WAS FLUNG THROUGH THE DINING ROOM AND INTO THE LIVING ROOM.
MY MOTHER WAS SO UPSET ABOUT ALL THESE THINGS THAT SHE SAID: GOD, I
CAN'T STAND THIS ANY LONGER. IF YOU WILL TAKE THESE THINGS FROM ME
I WILL BE A CATHOLIC. THE MANIFESTATIONS STOPPED AND SHE BECAME
A CATHOLIC. NOTHING LIKE THIS HAS HAPPENED SINCE. MAYBE SHE IS THE
KIND OF PERSON THE SPIRITS CAN WORK THROUGH.

Submitter comment: THE INFORMANT SAW AND EXPERIENCED THESE THINGS WITH HER FAMILY.
THESE THINGS HAPPENED IN DETROIT IN ABOUT 1910

THE HOUSE ON MENDOTA

EVERY MORNING ABOUT TEN O'CLOCK FOOTSTEPS WOULD COME DOWN THE
STAIRS AND WALK OVER TO THE BUFFET. THEN WE WOULDN'T HEAR THEM
ANY MORE. WE NEVER SAW ANYONE BUT THEY DIDN'T MISS A DAY. IN THIS
SAME HOUSE I COULD STAND AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRS AND NO MATTER
HOW HARD I WOULD THROW WHATEVER I THREW WOULD ONLY GO ONE STEP
AND THEN FALL ON THE STEP AS THOUGH SOMEONE WAS CATCHING THE
THINGS.

Submitter comment: THE INFORMANT LIVED IN THIS HOUSE IN DETROIT IN 1942.

IN THE TOWN THAT MY PARENTS CAME FROM IN AUSTRIA-HUNGARY, THE
CHURCH WAS HAUNTED AND PEOPLE BELIEVED THAT NO ONE COULD GO IN THERE
AFTER SUNSET. IF YOU WERE PASSING BY IN THE EVENING, YOU COULD
HEAR ALL SORTS OF STRANGE NOISES AND MOANINGS, EVEN SCREAMS.
ONE WOMAN SAID THAT SHE DIDN'T BELIEVE THE STORIES AND THAT SHE
MEANT TO GO IN THERE ONE EVENING AND SEE FOR HERSELF. SHE DID
GO IN THERE AFTER MIDNIGHT AND WAS NEVER SEEN AGAIN. THE NEXT
MORNING ALL OF HER CLOTHING WAS FOUND ON THE FLOOR OF THE CHURCH.

WHY HE SOLD HIS HOUSE.

EVERY DAY ABOUT FIVE IN THE AFTERNOON THE DOORKNOB TURNED ON
THE FRONT DOOR AND MY WIFE AND I COULD HEAR SOMEONE COME IN.
WE WOULD RUSH TO THE SPOT, BUT THERE WOULD NEVER BE ANYONE THERE.
A LITTLE WHILE LATER EVERY DAY WE WOULD HEAR THE WORST COMMOTION
IN THE BASEMENT- LIKE TWO MEN GRUNTING, HITTING, AND BANGING
FURNITURE AROUND DOWN THERE. THEN WE WOULD HEAR THE SOUND OF
SOMEONE DUMPING COAL IN THE DRIVEWAY, BUT THERE WAS NEVER ANY COAL
THERE OR ANY OTHER PLACE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD THAT WE COULD FIND.
A FEW TIMES WE CALLED THE POLICE FROM THE PALMER PARK STATION TO
COME OVER AND HEAR THE NOISE. THEY HEARD IT TOO BUT COULD NOT
FIND OUT WHO WAS MAKING IT. WE MOVED.

Submitter comment: THE INFORMANT TOLD ME THIS STORY IN 1955 WHILE HE WAS FILLING
MY TEETH. HE SAID THE HOUSE WAS ON SAN JUAN, TWO BLOCKS OFF OF SIX
MILE ( IN DETROIT ) .

THIS BOY WAS GOING TO HIS COUSIN'S TO GO FISHING WITH THEM.
WHEN HE GOT OFF THE TRAIN, NOBODY WAS THERE TO MEET HIM, SO HE
TOLD THE TRAINMASTER THAT HE WOULD WALK. THE TRAINMASTER THEN
SAID, "BEWARE OF JACOB MARLEY." THE BOY DIDN'T UNDERSTAND WHAT
HE MEANT, BUT HE STARTED WALKING TOWARD HIS COUSIN'S HOUSE. IT
WAS RAINING AND THUNDERING WHEN HE HAD SET OUT. HE HADN'T BEEN
WALKING VERY LONG WHEN HE HEARD A WAGON AND HORSES BEHIND HIM.
HE SAW AN OLD MAN DRIVING AN OLD WAGON. WHEN THE WAGON CAME
NEARER, HE YELLED OUT, "CAN I HAVE A RIDE?" NO ANSWER CAME
FROM THE MAN, SO THE BOY JUMPED ON.
WHEN HE WAS NEARING HIS COUSIN'S HOUSE HE SAID, "I GET OFF HERE,"
BUT THE WAGON KEPT GOING. HE JUMPED OFF, BUT HE HAD LEFT HIS
SUITCASE ON THE WAGON. HE WENT IN AND TOLD HIS COUSINS ALL ABOUT
WHAT HAPPENED. THEY SAID, "YOU MUST OF BEEN RIDING WITH JACOB
MARLEY."
THIS IS THE STORY THEY TOLD HIM:
ONE NIGHT, IT WAS THUNDERING AND LIGHTENING, AND IT WAS RAINING
VERY BAD. JACOB MARLEY WAS DRIVING HIS CARRIAGE ALONG THAT SAME
ROAD THAT NIGHT. THERE WAS A SHARP RIGHT TURN ABOVE THEIR
HOUSE, AND MARLEY HAD GONE OVER THE CLIFF.
THE NEXT MORNING THEY WENT DOWN TO THE CLIFF AND FOUND HIS
SUITCASE.

Regarding set-up of the submission card:

By moving the circumstances of collecting information to the right (taking up 2 instead of 1 line with it) you'll leave room for a title.

IT IS A COMMON BELIEF AMONG GRAVEDIGGERS (OR WAS) THAT
A DEAD MAN'S "REST" WILL BE DETERMINED BY THE QUALITY OF
THE EARTH IN WHICH HE IS BURIED--THAT IF IT IS SOFT AND
CLAYLIKE, HE WILL NOT BE DISTURBED, BUT IF IT IS HARD
AND STONY, HIS GHOST WILL BE RESTLESS.

FARMER BILL'S WILL

THE C.Y.O. BOY'S CAMP IS LOCATED AT PT. SANILAC, MICHIGAN.
MURPHY'S CREEK RUNS THROUGH THE CAMP AND AT ONE POINT, THERE IS A
LARGE SARCOPHAGUS SHAPED STONE IN THE MIDDLE. ON IT ARE A NUMBER OF
SCRAMBLED LETTERS AND NUMBERS. IT IS SAID THAT THIS IS BILL MURPHY'S
GRAVE. HE HAD OWNED AND FARMED THE LAND AT ONE TIME, IF ANY OF THE
CAMPERS STAYED OUT AT NIGHT ON A MOONLESS EVENING, THEY COULD SEE THE
COFFIN LID OPENED. IN THE DISTANCE
A SINGLE FIGURE COULD BE OUTLINED.
IT WAS OLD BILL PLOWING HIS FIELDS. I LEARNED THIS WHEN AT CAMP,

GHOST BELIEF

THE REASON FOR GHOSTS IS THAT WHEN PEOPLE DIE A VIOLENT DEATH
THEY DO
NOT KNOW THAT THEY HAVE DIED, SO THEY GO ABOUT DOING ALL THE
THINGS THEY DID WHEN ALIVE. THE ONLY WAY TO PUT THEM TO REST, IS
TO TELL A GHOST THAT IT IS DEAD.

MAGIC

IN MEXICO IT IS POSSIBLE TO TALK WITH THE DEAD IF YOU USE A
OUIJA TABLE. IT IS EASIER FOR SOME PEOPLE TO DO THIS THAN OTHERS.
YOU PLACE YOUR HANDS ON THE TABLE AND THE SPIRITS OF THE DEAD WILL
COMMUNICATE WITH YOU, AND ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS, AND VERY OFTEN
TELL YOU OF FUTURE EVENTS. THEY DO THIS BY MOVING
YOUR HANDS ON THE TABLE IN SUCH A WAY THAT THE ANSWER OR INFORMATION
IS SPELLED OUT FOR YOU. PEOPLE WHO ARE LONELY USE THESE TABLES.
