DAY OF THE CARP

WHILE LIVING IN JAPAN MY MOTHER OBSERVED THE JAPANESE CELEBRATION
OF THE "DAY OF THE CARP." IN JAPAN THE CARP IS CONSIDERED A VERY
STRONG FISH AND SO A PAPER CARP SHAPED KITE FOR EACH BOY IN THE
FAMILY IS HUNG OUT OF THE WINDOW AND FLOWN TO SYMBOLIZE THEIR WISH
THAT EACH ONE OF THEIR SONS GROWS UP TO BE A STRONG MAN.

BUGLING

NO SUMMER CAMP WOULD BE COMPLETE WITHOUT A BUGLER TO
WAKE THE CAMP. THIS CHORE FELL UPON ME TO SALUTE THE
COLORS IN THE MORNING AND RETIRE THEM AT EVENING.
WHEN OUR BOYS WOULD PLAY A NEIGHBORING CAMP IN A
BASEBALL GAME, THE BUGLE WOULD SERVE AS AN INCENTIVE
AND A FIRE FOR GREATER EFFORTS.

Where learned: MICHIGAN ; MEMPHIS ; CAMP SAINT MARY

Belief: Animal

Bite-Cure:

In Haiti, there is a small lizard-type animal, resembling a chameleon, because right before it bites you, it changes colors so that you can't see it. When it does bite, its jaws lock and it dangles on your body. The only way you can get it off is to find a donkey and make it bray - there by forcing the animal to open its jaws.

Religion

An extremely grim account of religious confraternities in New Mexico and Colorado which practice self-flagellation and other penitent practices, especially on Good Friday.
