DUCK ON A ROCK

THERE WAS A GAME HE ONCE PLAYED CALLED "DUCK ON A ROCK."
A GROUP OF CHILDREN WOULD GET TOGETHER AND PILE UP
STONES INTO A PYRAMID. THEY WOULD THEN FORM A CIRCLE
AND BEGIN THROWING ROCKS AT THE PYRAMID. THE ONE WHO
KNOCKED THE TOP ROCK OFF WOULD GET CHASED ALL OVER
TOWN.

DUCKY

THIS IS A GAME THAT DIDN'T COST ANY MONEY, BUT WAS
A LOT OF FUN TO PLAY. ANY NUMBER OF PEOPLE COULD
PLAY IT. YOU NEEDED A LARGE SPACE, A BIG FLAT ROCK
(THE DUCKY) AND A SMALLER STONE FOR EACH PERSON
THAT WAS EASY TO HANDLE. THEN EACH PERSON THREW
THEIR ROCK AS CLOSE TO THE BIG STONE AS THEY COULD
AIM IT AND WHOEVER WAS THE FURTHEST AWAY WAS "IT."
HE HAD TO PUT HIS STONE ON THE "DUCKY" AND THEN EVERY-
ONE TRIED TO KNOCK THE STONE OFF. AS LONG AS THE
"DUCKY" WAS EMPTY ALL WERE FREE TO RUN WITHOUT
"IT" CATCHING THEM. THIS WENT ON AND ON UNTIL EVERY-
ONE GOT TIRED.

GOBS

GOBS IS A GAME THAT IS PLAYED MUCH LIKE JACKS, BUT
ONLY WITH STONES. FIVE STONES MAY BE THROWN INTO
THE AIR AND THEN MUST BE CAUGHT ON THE BACK OF THE
HAND. OR ONE STONE MAY BE THROWN IN THE AIR, WHILE
THE OTHER FOUR HAD TO BE PICKED UP OFF THE GROUND
AND THEN THE FIFTH STONE CAUGHT. THIS IS DONE
FOUR TIMES, IF YOU CAN'T PERFORM THE FIRST TASK
(5 STONES THROWN AND CAUGHT). ANOTHER STEP IS
THE MAKING OF A CIRCLE OUT OF ONE HAND, THROWING A
STONE IN THE AIR, PICKING UP ONE STONE FROM THE
GROUND AND PLACING IT IN THE CIRCLE FORMED BY THE
OTHER HAND AND THEN CATCHING THE STONE THAT WAS
THROWN IN THE AIR. THIS IS CALLED "CHICKEN" AND
IS ALSO DONE FOUR TIMES.

PALLALEYS OR BOXIES

A GAME PLAYED BY GIRLS ON THE PAVEMENT. SIX
TO EIGHT SQUARES WERE CHALKED ON THE PAVEMENT, AND
THE GIRLS FLICKED A SMALL FLAT STONE BY STANDING
ON ONE LEG AND PUSHING IT WITH THEIR TOE BETWEEN
THE SECTIONS. IF THE STONE LANDED ON THE LINES,
THEY WERE FINISHED.

STONE SCHOOL

THIS IS A GAME PLAYED BY SMALL CHILDREN. ONE
PERSON IS CALLED THE TEACHER AND THE OTHERS ARE THE
PUPILS. THE SIDEWALK IS THE SCHOOL AND EACH BLOCK
IS A DIFFERENT GRADE. THE PUPILS ALL START FROM THE
FIRST CEMENT BLOCK. THE TEACHER TAKES A SMALL
STONE AND HOLDS IT BEHIND HER BACK. THEN CONCEALS THE
STONE BY CLENCHING IT IN EITHER OF HIS FISTS. HE
THEN PUTS BOTH FISTS IN FRONT OF HIM AND ONE PUPIL
GUESSES WHICH FIST HOLDS THE STONE. IF HE IS RIGHT
HE GRADUATES TO THE NEXT CEMENT BLOCK; IF HE IS
WRONG, HE FLUNKS AND STAYS WHERE HE IS. EACH PUPIL
GETS A TURN TO GUESS AND THERE ARE USUALLY ABOUT
TEN TO FIFTEEN CEMENT BLOCKS TO PASS.

Submitter comment: I PLAYED THIS IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD WHEN VERY SMALL.
