Strange Cure
As a small child, I was a frequent sufferer of nose bleeds. While
staying with my grandmother, my nose began to bleed, and she
suggested a strange cure she had learned as a child. She placed a
large spoon in the freezer, and when it was cold, she placed it on
the back of my neck.

It was believed that when an infant had a head cold, you would
mix vaseline and nutmeg together and place it in the mole {hole?}
of the infant's head, because it was soft and the head had not
closed completely. So the home remedy could work better and get
the baby well faster.

the leach. Doing this will simply cause the leach to fall off

and "nicotine juice from a pipe" (11128), but with no admixture
of vaseline or any other ingredient.

Puckett, Ohio, no. 12743: "For worms, take a drop or two of

Vance Randolph, "Ozark Superstitions" (1947), p. 120:
"Physicians in the Ozark towns have remarked upon the practice of
giving turpentine as a worm medicine. Turpentine is still
administered by many yarb doctors and granny-women, large doses
being given to small children. The stuff may eliminate the
worms, but it seems to be bad for the children's kidneys. A lot
of little children in the Ozarks die of nephritis, and the M.D.'s
