MY MOTHER ALWAYS TOLD ME THAT THE NIGHT BEFORE A TEST IF
I WANTED TO RETAIN THE KNOWLEDGE THAT I HAD STUDIED I SHOULD
TAKE MY BOOK OF THE SUBJECT THAT I WAS TO BE TESTED ON AND
PLACE THAT BOOK UNDER MY MATTRESS BEFORE I GO TO SLEEP, AND
THE KNOWLEDGE WOULD STAY WITH ME.

Submitter comment: THE THING ABOUT THIS BELIEF IS THAT IT REALLY DID WORK: I
WOULD USUALLY REMEMBER ALL THE INFORMATION.

It is my belief that the way a school day begins determines how
the rest of the school day will proceed. For instance if I go to
school one day and in my first hour I receive a corrected test back
with an "F" on it any other test I take or get back that day I will
fail also, regardless of how hard I've studied. This is also true for
days when something good happens to me in school. This belief does
not, however, extend out of school to my social life.

Submitter comment: I believe this because I've experienced it many times in the
past.

COLLEGE TRADITION

AT BALL STATE UNIVERSITY IN INDIANA, THE FINANCIAL AFFAIRS OF THE SCHOOL HAVE BEEN GREATLY AIDED BY THE MILLIONAIRE BALL FAMILY. THE FIVE BROTHERS WERE REPRESENTED IN A MEMORIAL AREA BY FIVE STATUES AT THE TOP OF FIVE PILLARS AROUND A SMALL COURTYARD. THIS AREA WAS CALLED "BENIFICENCE" AND HAD ITS OWN TRADITION. IT WAS SAID THAT A GIRL STUDENT WAS NOT REALLY A "COED" UNTIL SHE HAD BEEN KISSED UNDER
BENIFICENCE AT TWELVE MIDNIGHT (GIRL'S DORMS LOCKED UP AT ELEVEN). AT THE TIME OF THE KISS, IF THE GIRL WAS A VIRGIN, THE STATUES WOULD ALL SMILE.

A COMMON, THOUGH ENTIRELY ORAL, SUPERSTITION IS THE TYPICAL
VANDERBILT COED, OR T.V.C. SHE IS RICH, CONCEITED, AND
ALWAYS DATED UP A WEEK IN ADVANCE. IF NOT DATED UP, SHE
STILL REFUSES ANY OFFER FOR THE WEEKEND MADE AFTER WEDNESDAY
NIGHT, AND ALWAYS REFUSES NON-FRATERNITY MEN. THOUGH THIS
INFORMATION APPEARS IN NO CAMPUS PUBLICATIONS, IT HAS BEEN
PREVALENT FOR YEARS AMONG VANDERBILT MEN.
