Index

A systematically arranged list that provides enough information for each item on the list to be found. For example, an index of a book lists names and subjects with the page numbers where they can be found in the book. Periodical indexes list articles in magazines, journals, and newspapers. In a database, each record is indexed using keywords so that those records can be retrieved and sorted.
