TRADITIONAL FOOD

AT EASTERTIME THE SLOVAK PEOPLE MAKE "HRUTKA". IT IS A COMBINATION
OF EGGS (USUALLY AT LEAST TWENTY), MILK, SUGAR AND SALT. IT IS
COOKED IN A BIG POT UNTIL IT IS AS THICK AS SCRAMBLED EGGS. THEN IT
IS BOUND IN A VERY DENSELY WOVEN CLOTH TO FORM A BALL AND HUNG FROM
A ROPE TO DRIP AND DRY FOR AT LEAST A DAY. IT IS BLESSED AT EASTER
TIME AND RESEMBLES A CHEESE. IT SHOULD BE MOIST. IT IS SLICED
AND EATEN LIKE CHEESE.

Submitter comment:

INFORMANT'S MOTHER USED A TRADITIONAL COARSE CLOTH TO BIND THE
HRUTKA. IT WAS BROUGHT FROM CZECHOSLOVAKIA, AND WOVEN BY HER
FAMILY.
