NICKNAME FOR WHITE PEOPLE

INFORMANT HAS A YOUNG BLACK GIRL FOR A SECRETARY AT HIS PLACE
OF EMPLOYMENT. ONE DAY IN CONVERSATION SHE SAID TO INFORMANT,
"YOU'RE JUST A PECK OF WOOD." WHEN INFORMANT ASKED THE GIRL FOR
AN EXPLANATION SHE SAID THAT WAS A WAY THAT BLACK PEOPLE HAD FOR
DESCRIBING WHITE PEOPLE; "PECKERWOOD."
