PET NAMES OF THE BATOORO TRIBE OF UGANDA

CHILDREN (AND USUALLY FRIENDS, BUT ALWAYS THOSE OF THE
OPPOSITE SEX) HAVE TO ALWAYS ADDRESS THEIR PARENTS (OR
FRIENDS) BY PET - NAMES. USE OF PROPER NAMES AT ANYTIME
IS GROSSLY OUT OF PLACE. THIS CUSTOM IS PROPER TO THE
BATOORO TRIBE WHICH IS A SMALL TRIBE OF ABOUT 100,000
PEOPLE IN UGANDA. AN INTERESTING FACT IS THAT THERE ARE
ONLY ELEVEN PET - NAMES USED AMONG THE WHOLE TRIBE. NINE
OF THESE NAMES ARE: ADYERI (GODDESS), AKIIKI, ARALI (THUN-
DER), ABWOKI, APULI, ABOKI (TWIN), AMOTI (TWIN), ATENYI,
AND ABWALI.
