The James T. Callow Folklore Archive
IN MAINE, I WAS ALWAYS TOLD IF WHEN YOU WERE CLEANING FISH AND
YOU FOUND SOMETHING WHOLE IN THE GULLET, IT WAS A SIGN OF
GOOD LUCK. IF YOU FOUND SOMETHING PARTLY DIGESTED, IT WAS
A SIGN OF BAD LUCK. IF YOU FOUND SOMETHING OF VALUE, IT WAS
A SURE SIGN YOU WOULD BE WEALTHY SOMEDAY. IF YOU DIDN'T
BOTHER TO INVESTIGATE THE GULLET, YOU WERE MORE WISE THAN
CURIOUS.
