A WINEGLASS IS BROKEN BY THE GROOM'S STEPPING ON IT IN AN
ORTHODOX JEWISH WEDDING. THIS USED TO BE TO SCARE THE DEVIL
AWAY, AS HE MIGHT MAKE IT APPEAR THAT THE BRIDE WAS NOT A
VIRGIN WHEN THE MARRIAGE WAS CONSUMMATED. NOW, IT IS DONE TO
REMIND THE COUPLE OF THE HARDSHIPS IN LIFE BY BRINGING TO
MIND THE FALL OF JERUSALEM.
