The James T. Callow Folklore Archive
INDIANS BELIEVE THERE ARE ONLY TWO WAYS IN WHICH THE
SOUL CAN BE PREVENTED FROM REACHING "THE HAPPY HUNTING
GROUNDS." ONE WAY IS BY BEING SCALPED, AND THE
OTHER METHOD IS BY STRANGULATION. THEY BELIEVE THAT
THE SOUL ESCAPES THROUGH THE MOUTH AND HENCE
STRANGULATION PREVENTS IT.
