POPRAWINY (POPRAVENEE) CUSTOM

THE DAY AFTER A PERSON IS MARRIED, SOME OF THE GUESTS ARE INVITED
BACK TO THE BRIDE'S HOUSE TO EAT SOME OF THE LEFTOVERS FROM THE
WEDDING MEAL. THIS STARTED IN POLAND WHEN PEOPLE WOULD COME MANY
MILES TO A WEDDING, AND THE HOSTS WOULD BE OBLIGATED TO FEED THEM
DURING THEIR STAY. THIS CUSTOM IS ALSO FOLLOWED AFTER FUNERALS
WITH EVERYONE GOING OUT FOR A LUNCHEON AFTER THE CEREMONY. THIS WAS
DONE IN POLISH COMMUNITIES UNTIL CATERED WEDDINGS BECAME COMMON.

Where learned: MICHIGAN ; DETROIT

Subject headings: CUSTOM FESTIVAL -- Marriage Day after wedding
CUSTOM FESTIVAL -- Death Funeral Burial

Date learned: 11-00-1973
