A POLISH CUSTOM OF FRIENDSHIP

THE FIRST YEAR WE WERE MARRIED, WE RENTED OUT AN
UPPER FLAT FROM AN ELDERLY POLISH COUPLE. DURING
CHRISTMAS WEEK OF 1957, MRS. KINWEN CALLED ME DOWN TO
HER HOME. THERE SHE GAVE ME UNLEAVENED BREAD AND TOLD
ME OF A POLISH CUSTOM. SHE SAID IF WE BROKE THE
BREAD TOGETHER AND ATE FROM EACH OTHER'S PORTION,
WE WOULD BE FRIENDS FOREVER.

Where learned: MICHIGAN ; DETROIT
