THE PROVINCIALISM OF CATHOLIC WOMEN'S COLLEGES

WHEN I WAS A FRESHMAN AT MARYGROVE, ONE OF THE
TEACHERS (A NUN) INSISTED THAT SHE LOOK OVER ALL OF
OUR CLASS LECTURE NOTES. I'M LEFT-HANDED AND HAVE
TERRIBLE HANDWRITING. SHE MADE ME RE-WRITE EVERYTHING
NEATLY LIKE SOME DARN KID AND EVEN USE ROMAN NUMERALS.
I DON'T THINK IT WAS ANY OF HER BUSINESS HOW MY NOTES
LOOKED, BUT SHE MADE ME STAY AFTER CLASS TO CHECK
THEM. I HAD TO RE-WRITE THEM IF THEY WERE MESSY AND
TURN THEM IN.

Submitter comment: TOLD TO ME BY AN EX-MARYGROVE STUDENT WHO WAS A
FELLOW-TEACHER AT ST. ISAAC JOGUES SCHOOL AND A
PART-TIME STUDENT AT U. OF D.

Where learned: MICHIGAN ; DETROIT
