HOLY SATURDAY CUSTOM

EVERY HOLY SATURDAY A FEW MEMBERS OF THE INFORMANT'S FAMILY FILL TWO
BASKETS WITH KIELBASA, BREAD, CANDY, COLORED EGGS, CAKE, SALT AND
PEPPER, AND MARGARINE AND BRING IT TO THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD CHURCH TO
HAVE IT BLESSED. AFTER THEY RETURN HOME A MEAL IS COOKED WITH THE
BLESSED FOOD AND IT IS EATEN SOME TIME AFTER NOON. THIS IS THE
FIRST MEAL OF THE DAY FOR THE FAMILY. THEY DO NOT EAT ANYTHING
BEFORE THIS MEAL. THE LEFTOVERS ARE EATEN THROUGHOUT THE REST OF TH
EVENING. ALL OF THE EGG SHELLS AND CANDY WRAPPERS ARE COLLECTED IN
A BAG AND ARE BURNED LATER (SINCE THEY WERE BLESSED).

Submitter comment: THIS IS A CZECHOSLOVAKIAN CUSTOM THAT WAS LEARNED BY THE INFORMANT'S
GRANDMOTHER.
