SUGAR BEATERS

Submitter comment: NATIVES IN MUNISING CALL PEOPLE FROM THE LOWER PENINSULA "SUGAR
BEATERS". THE REASON FOR THIS IS NOT APPARENT, BUT IT SEEMS TO
BE DEROGATORY. THE EXPRESSION TURNS UP USUALLY WHEN THE NATIVE
REFERRING TO A DEER HUNTER FROM THE LOWER PENINSULA.

THE SHIP THAT WOULDN'T SINK

UPON HEARING THAT MY BROTHER AND I WERE DIVERS AND
WERE IN MUNISING TO DIVE ON SHIPWRECKS, SOMEONE TOLD US
ABOUT A SHIP THAT HAD FOUNDERED NORTH OF GRAND ISLAND.
THE SHIP WAS SUPPOSED TO BE LOADED WITH WHISKEY. HE
TOLD US THAT SINCE IT WAS A WOODEN VESSEL, IT WOULDN'T
SINK ALL THE WAY TO THE BOTTOM; BUT WOULD FLOAT
AROUND AT A CERTAIN DEPTH (UNDETERMINED) AND WOULD
PROBABLY HAVE FETCHED UP ON THE NORTH SIDE OF THE
ISLAND, HAVING DRIFTED THAT WAY AND EVENTUALLY GROUNDING
THERE. HE SERIOUSLY SEEMED TO BELIEVE WHAT HE TOLD US,
BUT I AM INCLINED TO THINK THAT HE WAS KIDDING.

THE CATFISH FISHERMAN

THE INFORMANT TOLD THE STORY OF A MAN WHO HAD LOST A HAND AND HAD
A HOOK IN ITS PLACE. HE USED TO FISH ON THE MISSISSIPPI FOR
CATFISH AND WHEN HE'D CATCH ONE, HE'D GET IT ALONGSIDE THE BOAT,
GAFF IT WITH HIS HOOK AND HAUL IT IN. WELL, ONE DAY HE GOT ONE
THAT WAS JUST A LITTLE TOO BIG. HE HAD IT ALONGSIDE THE BOAT;
BUT WHEN HE GAFFED IT TO HAUL IT IN, IT PULLED HIM UNDER AND
DROWNED HIM.
