LEGEND-SECULAR HERO

THERE IS AN OLD ENGLISH LEGEND THAT KING ARTHUR OF THE LEGENDARY
ROUND TABLE HAS A SON OR DESCENDANT WHO WILL SOMEDAY RULE ENGLAND
AND MAY BRING GREAT HARM TO IT.

Submitter comment: THE INFORMANT LEARNED THIS LEGEND WHILE TRAVELLING IN ENGLAND LAST
SUMMER. A SHOP KEEPER IN LONDON TOLD IT TO HER AND ADDED THAT IT
WAS THE REASON THAT THE ENGLISH OBJECTED TO HAVING GENERAL
MACARTHUR OF THE U.S. WHOSE NAME MEANS SON OF ARTHUR, AS HEAD OF
THE ARMED FORCES IN ENGLAND DURING WORLD WAR II. INSTEAD, GENERAL
EISENHOWER WAS CHOSEN.
