DANCES IN 1910

IF A FIGHT STARTED OUTSIDE THE MAIN DOOR OF THE DANCE
HALL, FIRST THE MOTHERS WOULD FAINT AND I WOULD PICK
THEM UP AND SET THEM ON THE BENCH (SOME WERE PRETTY
HEAVY), AND I WOULD MISS THE FUN. IT PAYED OFF,
THOUGH, SINCE IT'S BETTER TO KEEP ON THE GOOD SIDE
OF THE MOMMA. THAT MEANT A REAL MEAL SUNDAY NIGHT.

IN THOSE DAYS SOME OF THE FARMERS' DAUGHTERS DIDN'T
WEAR SHOES. YOU COULD REACH DOWN AND THEY WOULD
PUT A FOOT IN YOUR HAND AND UP BACK OF THE SADDLE.
BAD FEATURE WAS AFTER SOME OF THE SQUARE DANCES,
YOU HAD TO HAVE A JACK KNIFE TO PICK OUT THE
SPLINTERS.
