Slug Bug

When I was in Hawaii with friends a friend of mine
(one of them) suggested we play a game. It was called
slug bug. This is where you must look out for
Volkswagen Beetles / Bugs, call the color of the
car, then hit the person next to you in the arm. In
Hawaii this can become a very challenging and painful
game since there are so many of these cars. You
must have quick eyes and a liking of pain to play
this game in a large group of people.

A POPULAR HAWAIIAN HAND GESTURE IS
SHAKA, OR "HANG-LOOSE". THIS GESTURE IS MADE BY
FOLDING THE INDEX, MIDDLE, AND THE RING FINGERS DOWN
AND LEAVING THE THUMB AND BABY FINGER POINTING
UPWARD.

Submitter comment: THE GESTURE IS USED AS A GREETING, IT IS PRINTED
ON T-SHIRTS, AND AS A SIGN OF FRIENDLINESS.
IT IS ALSO USED IN PLACE OF WAVING GOOD-BYE
TO SOMEONE.

A POPULAR TRADITION IN HAWAII IS USING
THE TERM "ALOHA".

Submitter comment: WHILE IN HAWAII I LEARNED TO USE THIS WORD
IN MANY DIFFERENT SITUATIONS. WHEN BOARDING
AND UNBOARDING THE PLANE, ANN PLACED
A GARDINIA LEIGH AROUNG MY NECK AND SAID
ALOHA. BEFORE GOING TO BED AT NIGHT THE
OHTA'S ALL SAID ALOHA INSTEAD OF "GOOD-NIGHT".
EACH LETTER I RECEIVE FROM HAWAII IS SIGNED
ALOHA---ANN.

ALL DURING MY CHILDHOOD IN HONOLULU, HAWAII, I KEPT THE
SACRED TRADITION OF SALUTING THE "CAPTAIN"--A LARGE
ROCK AT THE SIDE OF THE ROAD NEAR THE PALI (THE CLIFF WHERE
KAMEHAMEHA MADE HIS FAMOUS LEAP). IT WAS SAID THAT ONE
MUST SALUTE IN ORDER TO INSURE SAFETY ON WHAT WAS THEN
A TORTUROUS ROUTE DOWN THE MOUNTAIN. NO ONE SEEMED TO
KNOW WHERE THE CUSTOM STARTED, BUT IT WAS VERY OLD.

POPULAR SAYING

I'LL BE GOG-SWOGGLED AND EATIN' UP MY BULLFROG.

Submitter comment: THIS DOES NOT APPEAR TO MAKE ANY SENSE, WHICH LEADS ME TO
BELIEVE THAT IT MAY BE A VALUABLE EXAMPLE OF SOMETHING
QUITE OLD. WHEN QUESTIONED, MY FATHER (E.W. MARTIN) COULD
NOT REMEMBER WHEN HE FIRST HEARD IT; HIS FATHER HAD SAID IT
TO HIM.

GROOMING WAS DISCOVERED TOO LATE TO REMEDY.
