SPIRIT MEDIUMS

THIS IS A BELIEF IN INDIA. MEDIUMS, PEOPLE WHO CAN CONTACT DEAD
SOULS, CAN CAUSE TROUBLE BY PULLING THEM INTO ACTIVITY.
IF A MEDIUM CALLS A SPIRIT, HE CAN CAPTURE THE SOUL OF A MAN
JUST DIED. THE SPIRIT OF THE NEWLY DEAD CAN BE FORCED OUT
BY THE MEDIUM. IT IS DANGEROUS.

STORM PROTECTION

IT IS A BELIEF OF THE INHABITANTS OF THE SOUTHERN PART OF THE
UNITED STATES THAT WHEN THERE IS A VIOLENT ELECTRICAL STORM
THE SAFEST PLACE IN THE HOME IS UNDER A BED COVERED COMPLETELY
WITH A DOWN STUFFED QUILT. THIS IS BECAUSE THEY SAY THAT IF THE
HOUSE IS STRUCK BY LIGHTNING IT WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PENETRATE
THIS QUILT.

Whip-poor-wills

In an area where whip-poor-wills live, they will gather around the house of a dying person in order to catch his soul. If he escapes them, they will slowly fall silent, but if they catch him they will all burst into song at once and will not grow quiet before morning. What they do with the captured soul is open to conjecture.
