School of Architecture & Community Development

Buratto, Giulia, Raegan Gauthier, and Jumana Zakaria. "Roots and Wings Collective."

The renovation of Reno Hall at the University of Detroit Mercy reimagines a historic campus building as a mixed-use, intergenerational living environment for graduate students and seniors. The project introduces a range of housing typologies, including studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom units, designed to support both affordability and diverse living needs. Emphasis is placed on accessibility and adaptability, with senior units incorporating universal design strategies such as wider doorways, while student units provide flexible layouts that accommodate both living and academic work. Shared amenities, including lounges and a central courtyard, are integrated to promote social interaction and community building across age groups. By combining inclusive design with a multi-generational program, the project expands campus housing options while fostering meaningful connections between residents, establishing a supportive and vibrant residential community.
