Saeed, Amir, and Eleanor Pennington. "AI Data Centers and Water Use in the United States."

This paper was written as a contribution to the Water Cycle Obseervatory Project at the University of Barcelona, to be published later this year.

Our paper examines the rapid growth of AI data centers in the United States and their substantial water usage. It highlights that data centers rely heavily on water-based cooling, consuming millions of gallons daily, particularly in already water-stressed regions. We discuss dederal policies, prioritize AI infrastructure growth, often giving corporations significant advantages over local communities, like Saline here in Michigan.
