Patel, Hely. "Mapping and characterization of the D.2.2 mutation in Drosophila melanogaster."

The D.2.2 mutation was discovered from a genetic screen in Drosophila melanogaster. This screen looked for mutations that disrupted the cell cycle, cell growth, and overall organismal development. These processes are not only key for development, but are also frequently dis-regulated in other genetic diseases, such as cancer. Here we describe the characterization of one such mutant,  D.2.2. Previous studies have shown that D.2.2 results in an overgrowth of mutant tissue in the adult eye, resulting in an increase in red cells. It is hypothesized that the mutation likely affects genes controlling cell division or differentiation. Here our focus is to determine the genomic location  the location of the D.2.2 mutation on to help understand how and why this particular mutation leads to tissue overgrowth. Our mapping is done with both a genetic and molecular aspect.
