Toma, Eemi, and Dr. Genevieve Meyers. "Legal Compliance vs. Ethical Responsibility and Accountability in Government."
This research examines the tension between legal authority and ethical responsibility in modern government decision-making. Although government agencies are required to act within the law, actions that are legally permitted do not always align with ethical standards. This presentation focuses on current government practices that comply with existing laws but raise concerns about civil liberties, accountability, and human rights. Examples include contemporary surveillance policies and enforcement actions carried out by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, as well as legal decisions supported by the U.S. Department of Justice. These cases have prompted public discussion about due process, transparency, and the balance between public safety and individual rights. Using Article II, Section 3 of the U.S. Constitution as a legal foundation, this research argues that government responsibility should extend beyond simply following the law to also considering the ethical impact of its actions. This study concludes that policies may be lawful while still creating moral conflict, highlighting the importance of holding government institutions accountable to both legal and ethical standards in a democratic society.
