This retrospective study analyzes survey data collected upon completion of the first semester of D3 patient care from the summer of 2022 to the summer of 2025 at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry. The aim was to evaluate responses of entering clinical DS3 students’ perceived readiness to transition from pre-clinical education to clinical patient care. The analysis focused on questions pertaining to preparedness for general dentistry competencies including patient assessment, diagnosis and prognosis, screening and risk assessment for head and neck cancer, treatment planning, informed consent, local anesthesia, periodontal and pulpal therapy, oral surgery, dental emergencies, and digital radiography.
