Klaft, Abby,, Anna Lassan, Batoul Mortada, Anaum Khan, and Mark Benvenuto. "Synthesis of Novel, Long, Functional Ligands for Potential Use As Water Pollution Sensors."

We present a straightforward synthesis of a series of long-chain ligands via a highly green method.  All syntheses depend upon a Schiff’s base condensation between an aldehyde and a difunctional amine.  These syntheses simply utilize the direct addition of neat liquids, or a liquid and a low-melting solid.  Characterization is via 1H NMR for each ligand.  The ligands should prove to be effective at coordinating metal ions, and thus at remediating polluted water, making them useful, inexpensive pollutant sensors.
