Smoking remains a major public health concern with significant implications for oral health. Tobacco exposure have been strongly linked to increased risk of periodontitis, soft tissue damage, delayed healing, xerostomia, and oral mucosal changes. This project investigates the relationship between cigarette smoking and oral health by analyzing de-identified clinical data from patient records at the University of Detroit Mercy Dental Clinic. Using a convenience sampling method, patient charts documenting cigarette smoking and completed intraoral and extraoral examinations were reviewed. Relevant clinical findings included periodontal status, caries experience, gingival health, lesions, pigmentation, and reported symptoms such as dry mouth. Descriptive analysis of the collected data was used to identify trends and relate findings to published literature. This project highlights the significant burden smoking places on oral tissues and reinforces the responsibility of dental professionals to educate patients, recognize early warning signs, and integrate tobacco cessation awareness into clinical care.
