The Importance of Oral Health Education: Oral Health Literacy Among UDM Participants

Zecchin, Danielle, Jade Boyd, Ashley Bryson, Maria Dimovich, and Erin Relich

One of the main roles of the dental hygienist is to educate the public on oral health and the prevention of disease. It is the standard of care to educate patients on proper oral hygiene techniques and be aware of their knowledge and attitudes towards oral health. Studies suggest that the public may not be receiving the education they need from dental professionals. The literature shows that there is a gap between the standard of care and patients’ knowledge. The purpose of this study is to explore the oral health knowledge of those in the University of Detroit Mercy community. Our goal is to raise awareness of this concern and instigate a change in how dental professionals approach patient education.
