IT IS A CUSTOM IN MY FAMILY TO USE THE PRESENCE OF A TEALEAF STEM IN A CUP
OF TEA TO DETERMINE WHEN A VISITOR WILL COME TO THE HOUSE. WHEN A PART OF A STEM
(NOT PART OF A LEAF) IS FOUND FLOATING IN THE TEA CUP, IT IS REMOVED AND PLACED
ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE HAND. IT IS STRUCK WITH THE CLOSED FIST OF THE OTHER HAND
AS MANY TIMES AS IS NECESSARY TO CAUSE IT TO STICK TO THE FIST. THIS NUMBER OF
TIMES IS THE NUMBER OF DAYS LATER WHEN A VISITOR CAN BE EXPECTED AT THE HOUSE.
THIS CUSTOM HAS CARRIED THROUGH AT LEAST TWO GENERATIONS ON MY DAD'S SIDE. IT IS
NOTED THAT, DUE TO INCREASED PERFECTION OF TEA, FEWER AND FEWER OF THESE "VISITORS"
ARE BEING FOUND.

DIVINING WATER

WHEN MY HUSBAND AND I WERE PLANNING TO CUT OUT A FRUIT
(IT TURNED OUT TO BE A QUINCE) TREE FROM OUR BACKYARD,
MRS. FOSTER ASKED IF IT WERE A PEACH TREE. SHE
WANTED A Y-SHAPED BRANCH FOR A WATER-DIVINING ROD.
SHE AND HER HUSBAND HAVE A COTTAGE IN CANADA AND SHE
WANTED TO SEE WHERE THE WELL SHOULD BE DUG.
WHEN I QUESTIONED HER ABOUT THIS STRANGE REQUEST,
SHE TOLD ME THAT DIVINING WATER BE DONE BY POINTING
A PEACH OR WILLOW BRANCH AT THE GROUND AND THAT THE
BRANCH WOULD REALLY PULL ITSELF TOWARD THE SPOT WHERE
WATER WOULD BE FOUND.
I DON'T KNOW IF SHE HAS EVER DONE IT HERSELF, BUT SHE
REALLY BELIEVES THAT YOU CAN DIVINE WATER THIS WAY.

OUR WELL AT OUR COTTAGE AT FARWELL LAKE WAS FOUND
BY THE WATERWITCHING METHOD. MRS. GEORGE CRAMER,
NOW DECEASED FOR FIVE OR SIX YEARS, USED A PEACH
BOUGH TO FIND THE WELL. I WAS ONLY TEN OR ELEVEN
YEARS OLD, BUT I REMEMBER TRYING IT MYSELF. WHEN
I WALKED OVER THE SPOT SHE DID, I COULD FEEL IT
PULLING DOWNWARD TOWARD THE GROUND. MY FATHER AND
MY UNCLE WERE WITH ME, BUT WHEN THEY WERE UNABLE
TO MAKE THE WATER ROD WORK FOR THEM. MRS. CRAMER
HAD NO EXPLANATION WHY SOME PEOPLE COULD DO IT AND
WHY SOME COULDN'T.

HAWAIIAN CUSTOM

WHILE LIVING IN HAWAII, I LEARNED OF A CHARMING CUSTOM.
IT IS THE CUSTOM IN HAWAII FOR PEOPLE LEAVING THE
ISLANDS TO THROW A LEI OVERBOARD (OF COURSE THEY
MUST BE ON A SHIP). IT IS BELIEVED THAT THE PERSON
WILL RETURN SOMEDAY IF HIS LEI IS CARRIED BY THE
CURRENT BACK TO SHORE, BUT IF THE LEI IS CARRIED OUT
TO SEA HE IS DOOMED NEVER TO RETURN. THIS CUSTOM
DATES BACK TO THE TIMES WHEN THE HAWAIIAN WARRIORS
WOULD LEAVE THEIR PARTICULAR ISLAND TO VENTURE TO
ANOTHER ISLAND IN THEIR PRIMITIVE OUTRIGGERS. THE
WARRIORS WOULD ALL THROW A LEI OVERBOARD WITH THE
BELIEF THAT THE GODS WOULD PROTECT THEM IF THEIR LEI
RETURNED TO SHORE BUT THEY WOULD NEVER RETURN IF THEIR
LEI WENT OUT TO SEA.

JACK IN THE PULPIT (INDIAN TURNIP)

IT WAS CALLED JUG WOMAN'S BABY BY THE PENOBSCOT INDIANS
AND REGARDED AS POISONOUS. THE INNER SEED, DROPPED INTO
A CUP OF WATER, WOULD FLOAT FOUR TIMES CLOCKWISE
AROUND THE CUP AS A SIGN THE PATIENT WOULD GET WELL;
IF IT SANK BEFORE THE FOURTH ROUND, HE WOULD DIE.
