Honorary Doctor of Laws

1990

Citation:

Respected for your integrity, commitment and strength of character, you have achieved the highest position in the state judiciary - Chief Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court. In this capacity, you have administrative authority over Michigan's entire judicial system, and have the distinction of being only the second woman ever to hold this position. You made your decision to become a lawyer very early in your life and pursued this goal with enthusiasm and determination. During your 40-year career, you have served the legal profession and Michigan citizens diligently in numerous positions - as an attorney in private practice, an attorney with the Friend of the Court Office in Wayne County, a judge in Wayne County Circuit Court, a judge on the State Court of Appeals and as a State Supreme Court Justice. You are known and admired as a person who has the courage of her convictions and the ability to stand alone, if necessary, on tough issues. Your strong belief in our judicial system and keen sense of justice are worthy guideposts for others to emulate. As an active participant in countless legal and judicial organizations, including the American, Michigan and Detroit Bar Associations and the National Women Judges Association, you generously contribute your time and expertise to the betterment of our legislative system. In recognition of your many years of public service, as well as your noteworthy achievements in the legal profession, the University of Detroit Law School is pleased to award you an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree. Commencement, University of Detroit, Law School, May 13, 1990.
